Hey all,
In my previous posts I have touched on what heart disease is and the genetics behind heart disease. For this one, I wanted to discuss what to do if you or someone you know has been diagnosed with heart disease. My sister is an RN and works in a cardiologist office, so I wanted to get her insight on the advice she gives patients in her office once diagnosed with heart disease.
"If someone is diagnosed with heart disease I tell them that diet, exercise, and medication compliance can help significantly reduce their risk of worsening the disease. Lifestyle modifications are key." - Kendall Love, RN
Now, my sister is no cardiologist, but she is VERY knowledgable on the heart and different diseases of the heart. Heart disease, if you have read my posts before, is the NUMBER 1 cause of death in the United States. Knowing what to do once diagnosed with heart disease and how to treat heart disease is imperative.
"The goals of treatment are to relieve symptoms, reduce risk factors in an effort to slow, stop, or reverse the buildup of plaque, lower the risk of blood clots forming, widen or bypass-clogged coronary (heart) arteries, and prevent CHD complications" (National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, 2014).
It is important to be knowledgeable on heart disease, anyone, including you and I, could be diagnosed with it down the line. Prevention is incredibly important as well, but also being realistic and know what to do if diagnosed is important as well.
I hope you find this post helpful! :)

Hey Alex! I really liked your post and how you included your sister in this! I'm not very knowledgeable with heart disease, so I did not know that only changing some lifestyles can help reduce heart disease. Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteIt's crazy to think that just a few lifestyle modifications can be so helpful with heart disease! Not enough people know that this is the number 1 cause of death in the U.S. & it's great that your blog is raising awareness about this topic! It's important to remember that anyone can be diagnosed with this disease.
ReplyDeleteGood post! Its just so crazy that heart disease is the number one killer in the country and the main ways to reduce or prevent it is just lifestyle changes. Changing diet, exercise, and reducing stress seem like such easy things but very difficult! I like that you cited your sister! Nurses are experts and their knowledge is often overlooked. Great post!
ReplyDeleteOut of all the diseases, this one is the #1 killer, and that is not surprising to me. I feel that what your sister gives for advice touches on all the important things you would need to do be a healthy person, but it is very vital in prevention of heart disease as well. The heart is an interesting organ and muscle to study. So many amazing things happen in such a small area.
ReplyDeleteI love this post . I never would have known what to do if I knew someone that was diagnosed with heart diasese.. I fully understand how this is the number 1 killer within the U.S
ReplyDeleteThis is a post I really enjoyed reading. The fact that you went out your way to also get info from your sister helps mak the information credible since she is an RN. Her advice is very helpful and should be taken serious because a doctor will also tell a patient those exact same words.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Alex. I really enjoyed that you got some key points from your sister who is a nurse. I work at Carle hospital but on a medical floor. I have worked on a cardiovascular floor a few times and it definitely can be a bit nerve wrecking dealing with heart patients. There may be something wrong with them but you can't tell by looking at them. Not my cup of tea. Thanks for sharing your knowledge about heart disease!
ReplyDeleteThis post did a good job of making it clear that once you were diagnosed with heart disease you can still do things to help prevent the damage from getting worse. I like that you got your sister's input. great job
ReplyDeleteI loved how you included a quote from your sister who is a registered nurse! It is sad how many lives are taken from heart disease! Being educated on the importance of our health can drastically alter the statistics. Great post!
